"Yeah," she said finally, "it must have been a nail. I think you might need stitches." She had forgotten how lovely Marta's back was. She had a long torso. Even though she was several inches taller than Alison their legs were roughly the same length. Her height was all through her waist. Her olive skin—both Marta and Mary Clare's grandparents were Basque immigrants—held none of the winter pallor which Alison despised in her own. She felt something like a faint echo of that passionate night she had spent with Marta over a year before and beat it down with the same horror with which she would have squelched an urge for serial killing. Not here, not now, not anywhere, not ever.
"No," said Marta, as if she could barter the wound down, "I don't need stitches. Just put some Super Glue on it. It will be fine."
Alison opened her mouth to protest and Marta turned on her fiercely. "I don't need stitches! Where do you think I would get the money to pay for stitches? Do you know how much it would cost to get stitches in the middle of the night? I don't have a rich girlfriend like you do! I don't have a job that comes with perks and insurance! Every single bit of money that we've taken in from rent next door has gone right back into the house for repairs and remodeling and it's going to be that way for another three years at least! I only make six dollars an hour on the phones—if I have to pay out two hundred for three stitches what are the cats and I going to eat this month?"
"Super Glue it is," said Alison, who knew when an argument was futile. She could not, however, keep from adding, "You know, she doesn't pay my way. I pay for myself."
"But she could," Marta said. "And that's all that matters, that in an emergency she could."
It took Alison a good fifteen minutes to hold the two sides of the wound together and apply Super Glue and she glued her own fingers together twice in the process. But it did stop the bleeding. Alison went into the bathroom to Wash her hands, wondering if she should mention AIDS tests to Marta.
Nope, she was willing to take her chances.
In the other room, Marta had finally shed the bloody, nasty T-shirt and was pulling another over her head. Like the Virago shirt, it too looked as if it belonged either in the trash or the archives. Alison had forgotten how pretty Marta's breasts were, just as she had put her back out of her mind. Or had she even seen them? They had come together with a savage passion that had not allowed time to remove their clothes and Marta had left the house while Alison was sleeping. Not now, not ever, she thought, trying to fill her head so completely with the mantra that there would be no room for an echo of anything else to sneak in around the edges.
